that time we finished half of a project

Things are moving right along in true start-of-the-year fashion. The hideous yellow walls in the office/play-craft room are now gone after my awesome husband primed and painted a nice clean and crisp white yesterday. We have to do one more coat on the walls, freshen up the trim and the doors and paint the ceilings and we can mark that off of our to-do list. Once the paint is dry, there are just a few more things to do before I can start moving in. So. Excited! I’ll do a post with our progress once the painting is done.

One of the items on my 2013 to-do list was to basically make a mini mudroom on this really awkward wall right inside our front door. My vision was to hang a shelf to display whatever my current obsession was, add coat hooks underneath that and build a bench with baskets that would hold hats, scarves, toys, etc. I would post a link to the original post, but I’m not entirely sure that I did one because I can’t find it. Oh well.

Anyways, it took us awhile to get around to it but we finally got the shelf up right before Millie’s birthday. It turned out exactly how I pictured it would, but styling it has proved a little harder than I expected. Which is silly that I thought it would be easy, because I have no idea what I am doing and my idea of decorating is throwing a bunch of stuff together.  I’m having problems adding enough items to add dimension and height without looking cluttered. It’s a work in progress, for sure.

IMG_5153I found these lights randomly at Target one day and fell in love with them. My only issue with them is the extra long cords that hang down, and I’m not sure how to disguise them. Any suggestions? Right now, we still have a bit of a winter theme going on. Mostly because I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to Christmas, but also because everything else I have screams spring and summer. Although, I think Cupid is whispering sweet nothings in my ear because I have been randomly picking up Valentines Day decorations the past few times I’ve been out and about.

The print was a Christmas gift for Sean purchased here and the frame was another awesome Target find. Seriously, I have a Target problem.

{please excuse the candlesticks that are screaming to be polished}

I have had the picture of Amelia framed for a long time and couldn’t quite decide where to hang it. I’m a little bit of a crazy person when it comes to putting holes in the wall to hang things. I know how much time and energy we spent cleaning, repairing and painting so I have to be absolutely SURE that whatever I hang is going to live there for a long, long time. This picture of her just makes me happy. I just picked up another frame that I am going to swap with this white one to fit better with my “theme”, whatever that is.

IMG_5159There you have it. Half of the project we started last year. I will spare you the bottom half of this wall, because right now it is bad. A random coffee table that has turned into a catch-all for basically everything we want to ditch. Hopefully when the weather warms up, we can finally build the bench! And kitchen table, and craft table, and…

the “mama and millie cave”

I tell you what…my husband has to be the most tolerant person on the planet to put up with my crazy house renovation ideas that have been swirling through my head these past few months. We hadn’t even finished ripping up the flooring in the kitchen before I decided to start on the face lift of our half bath (I still need to do a post on this – it’s mostly done!) and the paint wasn’t even dry on the bathroom before I started plotting my next line of attack. On this:

(please excuse the blurry iphone photo. and the mess)

The majority of what is in this room is just random crap, pretty much. Boxes of stuff that have just traveled room to room after we moved in, an over flow of clothes and shoes, this gigantic bed, and a ton of unorganized crafting stuff. My original thought was to just keep this a spare bedroom. Now, with Amelia growing so quickly I am already thinking ahead to her next bed. Her crib is not a convertible crib so this bed will most likely be hers once she grows out of the crib. My plan is just to put the mattress on the ground until she is old enough/big enough to have the frame…but that is a worry for another day. My new thought for this room is a craft room/office/play room. Otherwise known as the “Mama and Millie Cave”!

Obviously, this is still in the way beginning of the project. Like, barely even a twinkle in my eye beginning. I call this part – Operation Throw Crap Away. I have always been a bit of a pack rat (ok, maybe more than a bit. I’m sure my parents have pretty fond memories of my closets stacked full of boxes/bags/randomness), but I’m pretty sure that Sean is just as bad as me. If not worse. Once we get the stuff cleared out of here, there isn’t much that needs to be done that isn’t cosmetic. Tear down the Noah’s Ark border, a fresh coat of bright white paint on everything, some bright curtains, a desk, workstation and Millie’s corner of toys, books and bright squishy floor cushions. That’s about it…fresh, clean, bright accents in an inviting space. Ahhh! I’m pretty excited about this! Here is an idea what I have in mind. It’s not exact, but it’s a pretty good reference:
